<![CDATA[ Marie Claire ]]> https://www.marieclaire.com Wed, 27 Mar 2024 00:56:08 +0000 en <![CDATA[ The Best Hair Straighteners Add Instant Shine to Your Style ]]> It took over a decade, but I finally discovered the secret to perfectly sleek, frizz-free hair. Hair serums, the shine-boosting shampoos and conditioners, and blowout balms are helpful, but having one of the best hair straighteners in my arsenal is the true key. Thankfully, flat iron tech has come a long way since the early 2000s, when fried and fringed hair was (somehow) in vogue. Now, hot tools are developed to boost shine and preserve hair health. "Early flat irons had metal plates and required direct, often uneven heat, increasing the risk of damage," explains Syrenthia Quiñones, a Licensed Salon Professional and Senior Manager of Sales & Education at Mane. "Modern flat irons feature ceramic, tourmaline, or titanium plates for even heat distribution and less damage."

Often, hair straighteners come with adjustable temperature controls and digital displays to reduce overheating and provide smoother, shinier hair with less frizz. Ahead, hair professionals and editors share their picks for the best hair straighteners, including cordless and travel options.

What to Look For in a Hair Straightener

 • Material

The damage-inducing metal plates from the early aughts are still on the market, so do your research and know what material you're applying to your precious locks. "Make sure to invest in a high-quality hair straightener with ceramic or tourmaline plates (I prefer ceramic), as they distribute heat more evenly and cause less damage compared to metal plates," advises Ashanti Lation, a celebrity hairstylist who's clients include Lizzo and Normani.

 • Heat

If you can't handle the heat...you probably shouldn't have your hair straightener turned up that high. "Most hair straighteners come with adjustable heat settings for a reason," adds Lation. "You should be using a temperature that is conducive to the thickness and health of your hair. Using a heat setting that your hair can’t handle can damage your hair tremendously."

 • Cords

are cordless, making it easy These days, parking in front of a mirror with an accessible outlet isn't a necessity. Some tools come cordless, making it easy for you to straighten your hair on the go.

How to Keep Hair Healthy With a Straightening Iron

As an expert in and benefactor of healthy hair, Lation constantly emphasizes the importance of protecting your hair, especially if you regularly use flat irons or any heat. "Remember, maintaining healthy, straightened hair is about finding a balance between styling and caring for your hair," he shares. Below, a few of her tips to keep your hair happy while enjoying a hair straightener.

Use a Heat Protectant

A heat protectant spray or serum is a must-have before using any heat styling tool. Products like VIP Luxury Hair Care's Silk Shot Serum & Spray Set (Lation's favorite) or Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat & UV Protective Primer (Marie Claire's overall best heat protectant of 2024) will help reduce damage by creating a barrier between your hair and the heat.

Adjust the Heat Setting

Get clued in on what setting your hair likes to be straightened at—and don't go any higher. "On fine hair, keep the temperature low. Thick hair you can increase the temperature," shares Hurtado.

To get specific, Amika recommends below 360 degrees Fahrenheit for fine or thin hair, 360 to 380 degrees for normal, medium, or wavy hair, and 380 to 450 degrees for thick, coarse, or curly hair.

Limit Heat Exposure

Taking a break between hair straightening sessions will allow your hair to recover from the heat trauma, thereby maintaining its natural moisture and elasticity.

Proper Technique

Remember, the damage occurs during the straightening process, so be careful. "Section your hair and use smooth, even strokes when straightening," shares Lation. "Avoid going over the same section of hair repeatedly, as this can cause unnecessary damage."

How to Use a Hair Straightener

You must apply a heat protectant before straightening your hair. Once that's done, you can divide your hair into smaller sections for more manageable styling. "For each section, clamp the flat iron close to the roots, gently tap the iron two to three times to achieve added smoothness and control at the root, and then slowly slide it down towards the ends," explains Quiñones. "Repeat this process for each section until you achieve the desired style."

The stylist also suggests using smaller sections if you want better control. For a smooth finish, pair your flat iron with a fine-toothed comb, running the comb through each section as you work.

Should I Use a Straightening Iron?

Everyone can use a straightening iron, but some people should proceed with extra caution. Individuals with scalp conditions are strongly encouraged to consult their dermatologist before picking up a hair straightener. "Pregnant women should also speak with their healthcare provider due to potential changes in hair texture and susceptibility to heat damage during pregnancy," adds Quiñones.

<![CDATA[ Are "Roe-Bots" the Future of Abortion Access? ]]> Today, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, the case challenging the FDA’s approval for expanded use of mifepristone, one of two medications commonly used to end unwanted pregnancies and treat miscarriages.

The decision—which is expected in June—could put access to the "abortion pill" in jeopardy. A method that many people rely on for reproductive healthcare: A recent study published in JAMA found that nearly 28,000 additional medication abortion pills intended for self-managed abortion use were issued in the six months following the end of Roe v Wade.

But as the Justices listened to arguments, workers and volunteers for Aid Access, a non-profit organization that provides access to medication abortion by mail, deployed so-called "roe-bots" to dispense mifepristone outside the Supreme Court. The robots were operated remotely by Aid Access providers residing in "shield law states," where they are legally protected from anti-abortion laws.

A robot carries a box of mifepristone during a rally in front of the US Supreme Court on March 26, 2024, in Washington, DC.

"The main point of the robots, in addition to calling attention to the shield laws and legal loopholes we can leverage, is that it literally does not matter what happens at the Supreme Court or in the future: We will get people the care they need," says Mira Michels, researcher and volunteer at Aid Access. "We don't ever want people to feel alone. It is extremely scary to realize you have an unwanted pregnancy. We just want people to know that by robot, in-person, mail—it doesn't matter—we will be there."

Based on Tuesday's arguments, the Court appeared "skeptical" of the case levied against the FDA (largely that mifepristone is unsafe and has not been properly studied), according to observers.

As Joyce Vance, former federal prosecutor and MSNBC legal analyst, wrote on X: "the Mifepristone case looks like it will be dismissed on legal grounds, no standing, as it should be." Adds Nancy Cárdenas Peña, director of the Abortion On Our Own Terms campaign: "This case should never have made it this far—mifepristone has been on the market for over 20 years and has been used by millions of Americans. My sincere hope is that the Supreme Court will follow the science and decades of evidence, instead of advancing a political agenda that aims to ban abortion nationwide."

A "roe-bot" at the "Bans Off Our Mifepristone" action organized by the Woman's March outside of the Supreme Court. (Image credit: Getty Images)

But if the Supreme Court does decide to ban mifepristone or adds barriers to access it—while it will "certainly make it more challenging" and "increase the legal risks" for those who need the abortion pill, according to Cárdenas Peña—those in the movement are ready to step in and help.

"What will be important is that anyone considering self-managing with pills has the information and resources they need," Cárdenas Peña adds. People can call or visit If/When/How’s free Repro Legal Helpline for legal advice, get medical support from the Miscarriage and Abortion Hotline, and logistical support from Reprocare.

"There is an incredible legacy of women and people who've made this work happen and will continue to make this work happen," Michels says, adding that Aid Access has lowered the cost of medication abortion, provides additional aid to those in need, queer- and trans-inclusive care and even offers what is known as "advanced provision of abortion care," meaning people can obtain the pills whether or not they're currently pregnant. "I guarantee you, me and other volunteers and so many people I've met today are going to work tirelessly to make sure that, no matter what, abortion care will always be there."

<![CDATA[ Dua Lipa and Callum Turner Even Travel in Coordinating Outfits ]]> Dua Lipa is the definition of a jetsetter with a wardrobe to match. In the past few months, she's traveled from Jaipur (for vacation) to Los Angeles (for the Grammys) and back to London (for the BRIT Awards) with a slate of inspiring spring outfit ideas packed in her Hermès carry-on. Heading home from her latest trip to Paris, the singer enlisted her boyfriend, actor Callum Turner, for a coordinating style moment that embodies traveling in style.

On Tuesday, March 29, the two lovebirds were spotted toting their luggage outside of St. Pancras Station in London. They had just arrived in the city after taking the Eurostar from Paris, where they attended a Yves Saint Laurent beauty event the evening before. (Dua is a new face of the luxury beauty label.)

For a day in transit, Lipa wore a deep forest green leather trench coat that nonchalantly grazed the floor. The singer took her coat in a casual direction by layering it over straight-leg denim and slipping on her beloved Puma sneakers (which have become an undeniable staple of her street style wardrobe).

As for her accessories, Lipa carried a classic black Hermès bag decorated with a dainty scarf. She hid her face behind a sleek pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses.

Turner followed suit on the outerwear front, matching Lipa’s personal style by wearing a chocolate brown leather jacket with a rustic flair. The Masters of the Air actor kept the rest of his look fairly simple with a collared polo sweater, black straight-leg jeans, and Chelsea boots.

The two aren’t strangers to matching each other's style vibes. Whether intentionally or not, they often tend to coordinate outfits when the public sees them spending time together. A few months ago, Dua and Callum were spotted on a casual date while grabbing coffee in Beverly Hills. For the occasion, the singer opted for a pair of cropped light-wash jeans and a knit tank top; Turner took on the denim memo but matched his to a crewneck sweater.

Moral of the story: Couple coordination isn't something to shy away from, even in transit. And, Lipa's leather trench look is worth copying for an elevated twist on travel style (whether you're accessorizing with a partner or not). Shop similar versions of her casual-cool trench coat and leather travel bags below.

<![CDATA[ Christian Louboutin Threw a Disco-Themed Party for the Royal Family of Monaco This Weekend, and They Went All In on the Theme ]]> The British royal family can do glamor, sure, but so can other royal families around the world. As Marie Claire looks to broaden its royals coverage by featuring other royal families from around the world (like introducing you to the royals to watch in terms of impeccable style, the next generation of future queens, and dazzling royal weddings from years past), you can expect more coverage of the wardrobe and work of royal women like Princess Charlene of Monaco and her niece by marriage, the endlessly fascinating Charlotte Casiraghi, who both attended Monaco’s Rose Ball this weekend, hosted by none other than Christian Louboutin.

The “shimmering charity party for the stars” and the “glitziest and grandest occasion in Europe”—as Tatler put it—saw Charlene emerge in a stunning silver-pink Elie Saab jumpsuit, which was perfectly on theme, as this year’s Rose Ball was Disco Bal de la Rose Monaco. “The Christian Louboutin-hosted shindig took over Monte Carlo during the weekend and saw some of Europe’s fines grandes dames and beaux hommes rock up for a night of disco grooves,” the outlet writes. Even disco legend Gloria Gaynor performed hits like “I Will Survive” and “Never Can Say Goodbye,” People reports.

Charlene—a former Olympic swimmer and fashion devotee who is married to Monaco’s reigning monarch, Prince Albert—arrived clutching a bouquet of red and pink flowers decorated with miniature disco balls. “Arm in arm with her husband, Prince Albert, the pair made the usual splash among the photographers,” Tatler reports.

Charlene missed the Rose Ball last year, and Albert was joined by his sister, Princess Caroline of Hanover, who was, too, at the affair—more on her in a moment. Charlene dressed in Elie Saab for the occasion, “wearing a silver and rose-pink jumpsuit which glittered spectacularly,” Tatler writes. “Its glittery fabric was decorated with stripe motifs and complete with a plunging neckline and a fabric waist tie.” (The blog “Royal Couturier” noted that Charlene attended the party sans the ensemble’s cape component.)

Caroline wore a glittering black gown, cinched at the waist and with a skirt that gathered around her feet. Caroline’s gown also had a plunging neckline, and she too arrived holding a bouquet of flowers similar to her sister-in-law’s, complete with a peppering of disco balls. Caroline’s daughter Charlotte wore a silver sequin and silk dress paired with delicate diamond jewelry.

Charlotte has previously attended the Rose Ball with her husband, the French film producer Dimitri Rassam, but arrived solo this year as she and Rassam split two months ago after four years of marriage. Paris Match reports that Charlotte is dating again, evidenced by photos of Charlotte and writer Nicolas Mathieu taking a romantic stroll through the streets of the City of Lights before sitting on the terrace of a local café to enjoy a coffee.

The Rose Ball was established by Princess Grace of Monaco—formerly the Academy Award-winning actress Grace Kelly prior to marrying Monaco’s Prince Rainier in 1956—and the event now raises money for her charitable foundation following her death in a car accident in 1982. (It is named after her favorite flower, and the Princess Grace Foundation helps raise money for the next generation of performers to get their start in the arts, honoring Grace’s successful career in Hollywood.) “Each year, it sees the Monegasque royal family hosting the glamorous and the good from around the globe, with a special theme dictating the dress code,” Tatler reports.

<![CDATA[ Anne Hathaway Opens Up About Her Decision to Be Sober, Dealing with Anxiety, and Knowing She's Sexy ]]> Forget the "Hathahate" surrounding Anne Hathaway—it's long past time to celebrate this inspirational Hollywood actress. From Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada to Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries, she's earned a spot in rom-com royalty with her doe eyes, flirtatious grin, and reliable on-screen chemistry. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, she reminded readers of why she is so beloved, discussing her choice to be vegan, sober, and sexy.

One of Hathaway's greatest strengths is her willingness to open up about personal topics. Throughout the interview, she touched upon many vulnerabilities, including the subject of mental health. “I’d rather not be unseated on the day [of filming] by my anxiety,” Hathaway explained. “Part of the way I can tell myself that I am okay is by having such a complete level of preparation that if I get a critical voice in my head, you can quiet it down by saying that you did everything you could to prepare.”

This diligence not only helps her to avoid panic attacks but also ensures award-winning performances, such as her harrowing portrayal of Fantine in Les Misérables.

Hathaway recalled one occasion early in her career when her anxiety got the best of her on set, and she suffered a panic attack. “I had a horrible anxiety attack, and I was by myself and didn’t know what was happening," she said. "I certainly couldn’t tell anybody, and it was compounded by thinking I was keeping set waiting. Now I feel much safer going to someone in charge, pulling them to the side, and explaining, ‘I’m going through this right now.’ Most people will sit there with you for the 10 minutes it takes for you to come back down.”

Anne Hathaway 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Another area of her life discussed in the interview was her decision to stop drinking. Hathaway has been sober for five years now and stands firm in this decision. She joins the ranks of other openly sober celebrities, including Lucy Hale, Drew Barrymore, Tom Holland, and Chrissy Teigen. “I knew deep down it wasn’t for me,” she explained. “And it just felt so extreme to have to say, ‘But none?’ But none. If you’re allergic to something or have an anaphylactic reaction to something, you don’t argue with it. So I stopped arguing with it.”

Hathaway confirmed that this doesn't stem from a place of self-righteousness or judgment, but rather learning to choose what's best for her. “It’s a path everybody has to walk for themselves,” she said. “My personal experience with it is that everything is better. For me, it was wallowing fuel. And I don’t like to wallow. The thing that I have faith in is that everybody else is going to have one or two drinks, and by the time everybody gets to two drinks, you’ll feel like you’ve had two drinks—but without the hangover.”

Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway

Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway play lovers in their new film, "The Idea of You." (Image credit: Getty Images)

One of the most shocking revelations was that Hathaway was not considered "sexy" enough for Hollywood. Luckily, she knew herself well enough to dismiss these claims. “I was like, ‘I’m a Scorpio. I know what I’m like on a Saturday night,'" the actress joked. “The male gaze was very dominant, very pervasive, and very juvenile.”

This certainty in herself has grown over the years and led Hathaway to her latest role in The Idea of You. Hathaway plays Solène, a 40-year-old single mother who begins dating a 24-year-old musician. The musician, Hayes Campbell (played by Nicholas Galitzine), is part of a world-famous boy band, seemingly inspired by One Direction. The novel that the film is based on has been applauded for its sex positivity and depiction of female pleasure. “I feel ready to be a sexual creature out loud,” Hathaway explained of her decision to take the role.

“It’s not like one healthy, consensual female orgasm (okay, multiple) is going to change the world,” Hathaway joked. “But I’m really happy to be part of a story that takes pleasure in female pleasure.”

<![CDATA[ Meghan Markle Looks to Break Into the Beauty Space, Intending to Sell Fragrance, Makeup, Candles, and More with Lifestyle Brand American Riviera Orchard ]]> Meghan Markle just submitted papers to trademark the initials of her new business American Riviera Orchard—announced on March 14—and in the trademark application extension we got another very exciting clue about the forthcoming business: it intends to break into the beauty market, as well.

Part of the updated trademark application includes items for sale like soaps, creams, bath oils, gels, and salts. Also included are scented oils, air fragrance reed diffusers, incense, and “non-medicated veterinary grooming preparations such as pet shampoos and conditioners,” The Sun reports.

Meghan Markle

New paperwork filed on behalf of Meghan's American Riviera Orchard confirm her interest in dipping into the beauty market. (Image credit: Getty Images)

The list of beauty products the company is requesting trademark for is extensive but interesting, so please oblige us: fragrance sachets, lavender sachets, non-medicated skincare preparations, bath and shower gels and salts, non-medicated hair preparations, bath soap, bar soap, non-medicated hand soaps, body creams, bath oil, body lotions, cosmetics and body oil, scented oils, air fragrance reed diffusers, fragrances, room fragrances, incense, and candles made the cut.

In addition to expanding its product offerings, American Riviera Orchard is also seeking its CEO; The Daily Mail’s Richard Eden reports that Meghan is “interviewing candidates” to head up the brand.

The list of product offerings American Riviera Orchard is seeking to trademark is extensive and exhausting, and we're here for all of it. (Image credit: Getty Images)

“Meghan will certainly see success quickly once the store is launched,” brand expert Hayley Knight told The Daily Mail. “We have seen with previous celebrity launches that the demand is incredibly high, and products sell quickly.”

Going deeper into the product offerings (get ready for this!), for the household: household linen, bedspreads, bed blankets, pillowcases, bedsheets, bedskirts, throws, bath linen, interior decoration fabrics, curtains, textile wall hangings, aprons, woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, felt and non-woven textile fabrics, and table linen of fabric or textile made the list.

The brand's name is a likely callout to Santa Barbara, where Meghan and her family now live; it is referred to as the "American Riviera." (Image credit: Getty Images)

For the kitchen and food serving specifically, cocktail napkins, picnic blankets, coasters of textile, textile tablecloths, kitchen towels, kitchen linens, and printed cookbooks and recipe books were added, as were beach towels, beach blankets, scarves, gift wrap of textile or fabric, ribbons of textile materials, ornamental bowls of textile for decoration, beads for crafting, floormats, meditation mats, bath mats, yoga bolsters, meditation cushions, yoga blankets, meditation blankets, yoga straps, wallpaper, wall coverings of textile, decorative wall hangings, string bags for shopping, tote bags, leashes for pets, collars for pets, beach umbrellas, wine carrying cases, and wine bags with handles for carrying or holding wine.

The product offerings are just a start, as the brand is expected to turn into a Netflix show, a book, a blog, and possibly even brick-and-mortar stores. (Image credit: Getty Images)

(Hang with us here—but isn’t this fascinating?) American Riviera Orchard also looks to extensively sell paper products, like stationary sets, blank notecards, envelopes, printed notecards, printed holiday cards, printed greeting cards, printed place cards, printed announcement cards, printed invitations, printed recipe cards, embossers for paper stationary, seals, impression stamps, blank journals, blank paper notebooks, personalized writing journals, printed guestbooks, stationary-type portfolios, printed day planners, printed calendars, printed desktop planners, printed diaries, personal organizers, printed address books, paper party decorations, party ornaments of paper, printed decorative paper, paper tape, wrapping paper, gift wrapping ribbons of paper, and paper gift tags. In this vein, letter openers, gift bags, gift boxes, gift wrap of fabric or textile, calligraphy pens, writing instruments, desktop organizers, letter trays, event albums, photo albums, decorative cords, drawer organizers, and picture frames will be offered.

Rounding out the (exhaustive!) list is pillows, pillows for household pets, beds for household pets, household décor made primarily of textiles, and outdoor furniture. Whew! The updated application also sought to trademark American Riviera Orchard’s logo. (Now, just because it’s listed in a trademark application doesn’t mean it will 100 percent be made into a product, but gosh, we hope it does.)

Meghan Markle

Expect to see Meghan more and more in the public eye as the brand launch rolls out. (Image credit: Getty Images)

This update comes after an already extensive list of items was included in the original trademark application; this full-scale lifestyle brand is going to be bigtime and will eventually coincide with a cooking show on Netflix (aligned with Meghan and Prince Harry’s ongoing deal with the streaming giant), a book, a blog, and possibly even brick-and-mortar stores, in addition to retailing online.

We’re ready for it all!

<![CDATA[ Beyoncé Counts Down to 'Cowboy Carter' in the Double Denim Trend ]]> Bey Day is almost here, and the singer's Western era is just beginning—with a touch of 2024's reigning denim trends.

In the midst of her pivot to country, mere days away from the release of her new album Cowboy Carter, on March 29, Beyoncé celebrated her new era in head-to-toe designer denim. "4 days until act ii COWBOY CARTER," she declared in an Instagram caption.

The pop star's promotional photoshoot highlighted a number of independent and experimental luxury brands. Beyoncé wore a pair of Y/Project cut-out jeans, strategically sliced to look like a pair of chaps.

She paired the pants with a Marine Serre Regenerated Denim Jacket, a cropped piece patched together with different denim washes and the brand's signature half moon logo. There's also a subtle nod to Madonna's Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra with stitched circles on each breast.

The singer accessorized with a white cowboy hat, pointed-toe denim heeled boots, aviator sunglasses, a thick silver chain necklace, a denim Balenciaga Hourglass Small Bag, and of course, an all-American matte red lip.

Beyoncé isn't the first star to embrace the double denim trend this year. At Paris Fashion Week, street style was filled with denim-on-denim looks. And back in the states, celebrities like Sydney Sweeney have tried their own interpretations of the jeans-only look. Bella Hadid is committing to the cowgirl lifestyle, too, and recently wore her own all-denim outfit. Hadid's version featured a Y2K moto jacket silhouette, low-rise jeans, and brown heeled cowboy boots.

For her last pre-Cowboy Carter shoot, Beyoncé wore a black, avant-garde tuxedo with a twangy twist. Instead of a bow tie, she tied a shiny black ribbon around her collar, with a string of diamonds hanging down the center, mimicking a bolo tie. Bey even had a matching ten-gallon hat for the occasion.

<![CDATA[ Penn Badgley Spotted Filming the Fifth and Final Season of ‘You’ in NYC ]]> New York City, beware: everyone's favorite serial killer is back on set. Penn Badgley was spotted filming the newest season of You on the streets of NYC. Dressed in a maroon polo shirt, a black peacoat, and navy slacks, Badgley looked ready for action. Keen-eyed fans even spotted a gold band on his left finger, which may hint at a possible marriage in the upcoming season. His pensive expression also suggests that this shot will be used for one of his character's signature internal monologues.

Based on Caroline Kepnes's bestselling novels, the Netflix original series follows Joe Goldberg (played by Badgley) as love quickly turns to obsession over and over again. At the end of season four (spoiler alert!), Joe reclaims his identity and returns to his beloved New York City, now with Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) at his side. This leaves the next season to follow in the footsteps of the first season in NYC, a perfect full-circle moment.

Netflix also confirmed that filming had started in an Instagram post. “Back to where it all began. the 5th and final season of YOU is now in production,” the streaming giant declared.

But when it came to announcing the news on X, Netflix went with a classic Gossip Girl style post: "Spotted: Joe Goldberg in New York City. The 5th and final season of YOU is now in production."

This is a reference to Badgley's five seasons in Gossip Girl as outsider Dan Humphreys, which many consider to be the role that put him on the map.
