Here's the thing. People have sex. Movies have sex scenes. Wouldn't it be intriguing if a movie featured two actors having actual, consensual sex, instead of just mimicking sex in a way that looks great onscreen but is almost certainly very, very awkward in real life? Yes, obviously, we're aware that great, consensual, female-friendly porn exists, but we are not talking about porn here. No, we're talking about actual, mainstream (or, at very least, as the level of "mainstream" achieved by arthouse foreign films and indies) movies with actual plots that also happen to feature actual humans engaging in actual sex acts. Don't roll your eyes—these movies exist. And, not only do they exist, but there are, honestly, way more of them out there than you probably realize—and we're just highlighting 75 of our favorites.
You read that correctly: This list contains 75 sex movies that have answered your prayers and made all of your sex-obsessed dreams come true. They all feature plenty of sex, and, unlike most of the sex you see onscreen, the moments of hotness in these movies is all completely, totally, and one hundred percent real. It's intense and kind of hot to see people have sex in a movie and know it's actually real, and that's what you'll get with these movies. As you might expect, a lot of these movies are indies and foreign films—realms where pushing the envelope, especially in the realm of carnal pleasures, is more accepted. But, some of them feature fully mainstream stars and Oscar winners like Al Pacino, Mark Rylance, and even Dame Helen Mirren.

'Inside Deep Throat'
In 2005, this documentary dug, um, well, deep, into the iconic 1972 pornographic film Deep Throat and its cultural impact. In the name of education, it contains 20 seconds of unsimulated fellatio courtesy of the source material, along with interviews a range of people including Linda Lovelace, Gore Vidal, Larry Flynt, Hugh Hefner, and John Waters.
'Female Vampire'
If you like your horror with a healthy side of sex, 1973's Female Vampire is a must-watch. The movie is literally about a woman, (the Countess Irina von Karlstein), who is essentially a sex vampire—as in she needs sex instead of blood to stay alive. The unsimulated sex comes in during the murder scenes, in which the Countess performs oral sex on her victims until they die (as you do). There were three versions of the film—one that's a standard, mainstream horror movie, another that mixes the horror with sex, and a third that's straight up hardcore porn.
'Emmanuelle 5'
Another film with multiple versions is Emmanuelle 5. The 1987 French film is part of the ongoing Emmanuelle series and exists in three distinct versions—its original theatrical cut, a French home video version with extra hardcore sex scenes, and a US version that includes new scenes that were filmed in a more comedic style.
In the movie, Emmanuelle is a filmmaker who debuts a scandalous, erotic film at Cannes. The original release of Emmanuelle 5 was met with some controversy due to speculation that director Walerian Borowczyk actually only directed the sexy film-within-a-film.
'99 Women'
This 1969 movie was one of the first examples of the "women in prison" genre and there are reportedly four versions of it in existence, including Jesús Franco's director's cut and a French hardcore version released in 1974 that includes more than eight minutes of new, hardcore footage filmed by Claude Sendron.
'Starlet'
Starlet, released in 2012, is an indie drama set in the porn capital—the San Fernando Valley in Southern California. It's not surprising, then, that the movie includes some unsimulated sex.
'Groupie Girl'
This drama, also known by the title I Am a Groupie!, about groupie life in the rock music scene, was written by director Derek Ford and real-life former groupie Suzanne Mercer. The movie was originally released in 1970, but was re-released in 1974 with additional, hardcore scenes added in.
'Sex Express'
Released as Diversions in the US, Derek Ford's 1976 Sex Express focuses on a woman who loses herself in a series of sexual fantasies while on a train ride. There's a hardcore export version and the German version of the film reportedly includes a golden shower sequence.
This movie is not readily available to stream online.
'James Joyce's Women'
Produced by and starring Fionnula Flanagan and based on her 1977 play of the same name, James Joyce's Women includes about 20 minutes of footage of Flanagan masturbating on camera.
'Pornopung'
This 2013 Norwegian movie about a guy who moves to Oslo for school and finds himself a student of his two new pickup artist roommates, includes a scene of unsimulated fellatio.
'Keep It Up Downstairs'
Think Downtown Abbey, but make it sexy/funny. This 1976 British sex comedy (also known as My Favorite Butler) follows the sexual adventures of the inhabitants of Cockshute Castle. A hardcore version featuring inserts filmed with body doubles also exists.
'Nude for Satan'
This trippy Italian film is best described as "erotic horror." The original version was softcore, but a hardcore version (filmed using a body double for lead actress Rita Calderoni) also exists.
'Keep It Up, Jack'
British sex comedy Keep It Up, Jack is about a struggling drag artist who inherits a brothel from his dead aunt (yep and stay with us, because the plot only continues down the path of WTF-ery), and then proceeds to impersonate her (that would be the dead aunt) in an effort to seduce the female clients of said brothel. A version of the film including explicit sex scenes was also released, but the hardcore scenes don't feature the credited cast.
This movie is not readily available to stream online.
'Girls in the Night Traffic'
This Jesús Franco film focuses on three women who share an apartment and occasionally freelance as sex workers to pay the rent. The Blu-ray release includes both the softcore and hardcore versions of the movie.
'Taxi zum Klo'
This German dark comedy delves into the differences between the private and public lives of a teacher in Berlin and features hardcore gay sex scenes.
'Needle Boy'
This 2016 Danish film by Alexander Bak Sagmo features non-simulated sex acts. The movie itself is dark—about a 23-year-old man, who, convinced he's evil, shows up at his university with a gun and a plan to shoot his fellow students.
'Immoral Women'
This movie, by director Walerian Borowczyk, actually includes three stories— titled Margherita, Marceline, and Marie, respectively. The first, Margherita, includes an unsimulated intercourse scene.
'Sister Emanuelle'
The Danish DVD version of this 1977 film by Giuseppe Vari includes hardcore sex scenes.
'The Alcove'
While the characters do watch some hardcore sex on a vintage film reel at one point, 1985's The Alcove is mostly a softcore film. Still, the Joe D'Amato-helmed movie contains some unsimulated scenes.
'The Wrong Ferarri'
This 2011 experimental film by musician Adam Green features a costarring performance by Macaulay Culkin and, maybe even more notably, an unsimulated scene of Green being anally penetrated by a dildo.
'Stupid Boy'
Also known as Garçon stupide, this 2004 French film by Lionel Baier contains "strong" real sex.
This movie is not readily available to stream online.
'Bare Behind Bares'
This is a sexploitation film, so it's not shocking that there's some real sex involved. The 1980 film (which was released in Brazil as A Prisão), is set in a women's prison and includes a handful of hardcore scenes.
'La Noche'
This 2016 Spanish film by Edgardo Castro has a hyper-realistic aesthetic and lengthy scenes of unsimulated sex acts. The story focuses on Martin, a lonely man in this 40s looking for connection through sex.
'Angry Painter'
In this Korean film by Kyu-hwan Jeon, released in 2015, this list of "x-rated" content includes unsimulated intercourse scenes between actor Moon Jong-won and Russian actress Natallia Bulynia.
This movie is not readily available to stream online.
'Black Emanuelle'
This 1975 film spawned a long series of sequels, all focused on the gorgeous leading lady, who only goes by Emanuelle as a pseudonym. IRL, she's a journalist and photographer named Mae Jordan. In the first film in the series, "Emanuelle" takes an assignment working with a diplomatic couple and ends up embarking on sexual relationships with both of them. While the movie does feature hardcore scenes, they were filmed by body doubles.
'Love Machine'
This Russian lyric porn film is based on the director's real relationship with his ex and there's at least one scene of oral sex that's as real as the movie's inspo.
'Spetters'
How's this for a premise: Three dirt-bike racing guys all end up seduced by the sexy, sexy French fry-selling hottie who works their races. So much (largely unsimulated) sex ensues. Intrigued? Then this 1980 Dutch sex romp is right up your alley.
'Ken Park'
This 2002 movie follows the lives of a group of teenagers in California. It was written by Harmony Korine (yes, of Spring Breakers fame) and was based on the real journals and memories of the film's director, Larry Clark. The unflinching look at teen life includes a mix of simulated and unsimulated sex scenes.
'Kissing on the Mouth'
This 2005 movie is credited with being one of pioneers of the Mumblecore movement and features graphic depictions of sex, including a very graphic and very real scene of masturbation that leads to equally real ejaculation.
'Léa'
This 2011 French drama features a lot of sexy (or at least sex-filled) scenes, including one completely unsimulated act of cunnilingus.
'Play Motel'
This 1979 film falls into the Italian genre of giallo, a specific brand of murder mystery movies that also include elements of psychological horror and eroticism. Play Motel is heavy on the latter, with multiple hardcore scenes—and even more added back into the 2015 Blu-Ray edition.
This movie is not readily available to stream online.
'The Girl from Starship Venus'
Everything you need to know about this movie is in its original title: The Sexplorer. It probably goes without saying that this one's a comedy.
'Secret Rites'
Described as a "pseudo-documentary," this early-70s movie dives deep into the occult, witchcraft, and black magic. And, just to give you an idea of how sexy things get within those topics, the movie was also released in a hardcore version, for the full XXX-factor.
'Cry Uncle!'
This 1971 raunchy comedy follows a decidedly slovenly private eye who takes a job investigating a murder for a millionaire client. It's probably most famous, however, for the scene of unsimulated oral sex it features.
'Gift'
This 1966 Danish movie is known by several names—in addition to Gift, it's known as Poison (in Danish) and, in the United States, it was released as Venom. This was one of the first Danish movies to feature unsimulated sex, so it's a trailblazer in the real-sex-in-mainstream-movies genre, but tracking down a copy isn't easy. It's not available to stream on any of the big platforms, but sketchier streams are out there on the great wide web, if you dare.
'Wetlands'
Based on the 2008 novel of the same name, Wetlands (known in German as Feuchtgebiete) is your classic, brutally honest coming-of-age movie. The movie deals with a lot of big themes, like feminism and sexuality, but its 18-year-old protagonist is also the kind of girl who masturbates with vegetables and ends up in the hospital after an anal hair shaving experiment gone awry, so there's that.
'Much Loved'
Much Loved (also known as Zin Li Fik) is known for more than its unsimulated sex scenes. The 2015 French-Moroccan drama was one of the first movies to ever address the issue of prostitution in Morocco (where the movie is banned, FYI, over objections to its content).
The movie focuses on the stories of four female sex workers, and addresses serious issues like the exploitation of prostitutes, the way sex workers are treated by pimps, and police corruption.
'Stranger by the Lake'
Stranger by the Lake (or, as it's known in French, L'Inconnu du lac) is a bona fide critical darling. The 2013 French drama-thriller premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where its director, Alain Guiraudie, won Best Director. As if that weren't critical cred enough, the movie also won the Queer Palm award and earned a place on several top ten lists in 2014.
The movie focuses on Franck, a regular at a nude beach known as a cruising spot for gay men, who becomes infatuated with the handsome Michel—even after he witnesses Michel murdering another man in the lake.
'Sexual Chronicles of a French Family'
Sexual Chronicles of a French Family is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. The 2012 French comedy-drama film centers on a family who gather to open up about their sexual experiences when the youngest son in the family is caught filming himself masturbating in class. There are two versions of the movie: the Sensual version (which is softcore) and the Sexual version (yep, hardcore).
'We Are the Flesh'
We Are the Flesh, aka by its Spanish title, Somos la Carne, is a 2016 Mexican-French horror film that focuses on two siblings forced to take extraordinary measures (of the Cersei and Jaime Lannister-esque variety) to survive in a scary AF, post-apocalyptic world.
'Blue Is the Warmest Colour'
The love scenes in Blue Is the Warmest Colour, which opens on an extended, 10-minute sex scene, are undeniably captivating. That's fitting, considering how impossible it is not to get sucked in to the relationship the film depicts between Adèle and Emma.
'I Want Your Love'
I Want Your Love is the title of both a 2010 short film and a 2012 full-length film, both written and directed by Travis Matthews. Both movies focus on Jesse Metzger, a gay man who has to leave San Francisco and move back to his hometown because of financial struggles. In both versions of the story, the actors use their own names and incorporate elements of their real lives into the plot. The movies are also known for their graphic depictions of sex—which isn't shocking when you know that they were both produced, in part, by NakedSword, a studio that produces gay porn.
'Paradise: Faith'
Paradise: Faith is the second movie in Austrian director Ulrich Seidl's Paradise trilogy. The movie focuses on Anna Maria, a devout Catholic woman, who is thrown into conflict when her estranged Muslim husband, who is partially-paralyzed returns home and demands her love. The movie made waves for including unsimulated scenes of masturbation and fellatio.
'8mm 2'
Don't let the title fool you: This 2005 movie is not a sequel to 1999's 8mm. In fact, the movie's original title was The Velvet Side of Hell. Still, it features lots of unsimulated and pornographic scenes, if that's what you're looking for.
'Anatomy of Hell'
This 2004 French erotic drama explores the darker sides of sexuality, complete with unsimulated sex scenes. The movie tells the story of a lonely woman who pays a gay man to spend four days locked away with her in an isolated house to explore all aspects of sexuality.
'Otto; or, Up with Dead People'
Another Bruce LaBruce entry on the list, Otto; or, Up with Dead People is a queer cinema horror film about a zombie who ends up in an underground filmmaker's zombie porno film. The sex is real, the gore, thankfully, is not.
'Baise-moi'
Baise-moi (English translation: "F*ck Me") is a 2000 French thriller about two women set out to get revenge on people who wronged them, including a group of men who gang rape one of them. The film has, understandably, been controversial since its release.
'A Real Young Girl'
Although this movie was made in 1976, it was so controversial it wasn't released in theaters until 2000. The source of the controversy? The film's use of unsimulated sex as well as scenes in which the lead, Charlotte Alexandra, exposes her breasts and vulva. Although Alexandra was 20 when the movie was filmed, she was playing a 14-year-old character.
'Caligula'
1979's Caligula is slightly controversial in its status as a "regular" film vs. a porn film—but the fact that it has A-list actors like Peter O'Toole and Helen Mirren certainly lends it some mainstream cred. The movie was produced by Penthouse Magazine, and featured unsimulated sex scenes that were added post-production (much to the chagrin of the director) and acted out by "Penthouse Pets."
'Shortbus'
Good ol' Shortbus! This 2006 comedy is one of the better-known movies of this particular subgenre, and for good reason: it's legit great. The film centers on the happenings at an artsy sexual salon in Brooklyn, and chronicles one woman's very explicit adventures in trying to achieve orgasm. (FYI, actress Sook-Yin Lee was almost fired from her radio gig because of this movie, but kept her job thanks to the support of A-listers like Gus Van Sant, Francis Ford Coppola, and Yoko Ono.)
'9 Songs'
If you like your unsimulated sex with a side of hipster angst, look no further than 2004's 9 Songs. The film is essentially about a couple who a) attend concerts by aughts bands like Franz Ferdinand and The Dandy Warhols, and b) have a ton of sex. And it's very, very real.
'The Brown Bunny'
Remember when The Brown Bunny came out in 2003 and no one could stop talking about the oral sex scene between Vincent Gallo and Chloe Sevigny? It broke alllll kinds of boundaries (after all, Sevigny is a household name-level actress), and remains one of the most notable unsimulated moments in film.
'Cruising'
This circa-1980 thriller by William Friedkin stars Al Pacino as a cop who's trying to find a serial killer targeting gay men. The film's original version featured footage of gay sex, and while some frames remain visible in the final cut, a lot was deleted to nab an R rating. (Upon its release, this movie caused quite a bit of drama, and was protested by gay rights activists who felt stigmatized.)
'Intimacy'
Intimacy is a 2001 British film about a man who falls in love with the woman he's having casual sex with—only to realize she's married and has no plans to leave her husband (sorry, that was definitely a spoiler). The sex is real, which is pretty rare for a mainstream movie that won Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival.
'Lie with Me'
Lie with Me is a 2005 indie drama about a man and woman's affair—and stars two pretty well known actors: Eric Balfour (who plays Milo Pressman in 24) and Lauren Lee Smith (who plays Riley Adams in CSI). The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, but wasn't exactly a critical success.
'Antichrist'
Lars von Trier strikes again! The director's 2009 film Antichrist stars Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg—and while they reportedly used body doubles, the sex is most definitely unsimulated. (Note: This film was highly controversial for scenes of vaginal mutilation, but on the other hand Gainsbourg won Best Actress at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.)
'Nymphomaniac'
Yup, Lars von Trier is back at it. This 2013 film starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, and Willem Dafoe (among others) featured unsimulated sex per usual—but there's a catch. The actors simulated sex, and then body doubles had IRL sex, and their genital area was superimposed on the actors. #Normal. Also, apparently some prosthetic vaginas were floating around set.
'In the Realm of the Senses'
In the Realm of the Senses is about real-life Geisha Sada Abe, who's famous for having killed her lover before cutting off his penis and testicles. The film's unsimulated sex scenes were so X-rated that it was originally banned in the United States. "The trickiest problem we faced was finding actors," director Nagisa Oshima said. "I anticipated that the fact that we would be asking them to have actual sex in front of the camera would be a huge obstacle. Contrary to my expectation, however, finding women to audition turned out to be easy: they came in great numbers, saying if sex was required, well, that was no big deal. In the end, even my wife, the actor Akiko Koyama, said that if no one else would do it, then she would be willing."
'Pink Flamingos'
Many people consider Pink Flamingos to be one of the most disturbing movies ever made. The 1972 John Waters film stars drag queen Divine who, in one scene, performs oral sex on the actor playing her son in the movie. Unsurprisingly, the film was banned in several countries.
'Pola X'
This 1999 French film tells the story of a young writer who meets a woman who claims to be his long lost sister—and then proceeds to have a romance with her. The movie was submitted to Cannes in 1999 and famously features unsimulated scenes between actors Guillaume Depardieu and Yekaterina Golubeva.
'Scarlet Diva'
Scarlet Diva is a 2000 film by Italian writer, director, and actress Asia Argento. The movie is a semi-autobiographical account of Argento's life as an actress. Argento confirmed after the film's release that many of the sex scenes were not simulated.
'Little Ashes'
While the sex itself was simulated, the reaction shot was not. Audiences got a very authentic look at Robert Pattinson's "O" face during his performance as Salvador Dalí in Little Ashes. Pattinson admitted that he actually masturbated on camera for make the scene realistic. He explained that faking the face "just doesn’t work... My... face is recorded for eternity."
'Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo'
The movie, which premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, gained notoriety for featuring a 13-minute long, unsimulated oral sex scene, in which a man goes down on the character Ophélie (played by Ophélie Bau).
'Marfa Girl 2'
The movie, which is a sequel to 2012's Marfa Girl, focuses on a young mother from Marfa, Texas, who leans on her family while trying to recover after suffering domestic abuse. Critics made note of the film's unsimulated sex and the movie's firm stance "sex is just another way of communication."
'Ana, mon amour'
The 2017 Romanian drama follows Ana (played by Diana Cavallioti) and Toma (played by Mircea Postelnicu), who end up having (apparently quite real) sex after a hearted debate babout Nietzche's philosophy (you know, as you do) and later have to grapple with Ana's anxiety attacks and mental health issues.
'Paris 05:59: Théo & Hugo'
Paris 05:59: Théo & Hugo, a 2016 French drama about the relationship between two gay men, opens big with an 18-minute, unsimulated gay orgy scene at a Paris sex club.
'Romance'
In an interview after the release of this 1999 French arthouse flick, director Catherine Breillat told the New York Post of the onscreen sex scenes, “An actor never pretends. At the same time, I’m not perverse. I don’t impose on my actors or actresses any more than is absolutely necessary. But I don’t pretend. I don’t simulate. The deal was, we’d go as far as we had to, as far as the film required.”
'The Idiots'
Surprise, surprise: Lars von Trier makes the list again, this time with a controversial 1998 black-comedy film in which a group of friends pretend to be developmentally disabled in public to disrupt bourgeois society—an offensive premise that prompted walkouts when the movie debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, but also earned it a nomination for the Palme d’Or prize there. The film includes an explicit orgy scene, during which stand-ins performed unsimulated intercourse for the main actors.
'Pasolini'
Willem Dafoe took on the lead role in this 2014 biopic of the Italian writer and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini. As it portrays the final day of Pasolini’s life before his (still unsolved) 1975 murder, it doesn’t shy away from exploring his sexuality, including with an unsimulated fellatio scene in Pasolini’s last hours.
'Rotting in the Sun'
This comedy thriller, which debuted at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, depicts social media star Jordan Firstman and Sebastián Silva, the film’s actual director, as fictionalized versions of themselves. The duo’s onscreen meeting occurs at a gay nude beach resort, where real sex scenes and full-frontal nudity abound—though Silva hoped those aspects would merely add to the story, rather than becoming the entire story themselves. “The sex is so graphic that it’s a double-edged sword. People, especially Americans, are so scared of genitals. I’m scared a little bit that a lot of people will center on the cocks and [only] talking about cocks when it’s just a trait of one of the characters,” he told Variety at the film festival.
‘Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn’
This 2021 Romanian comedy opens with the two main characters’ sex tape—the accidental leak of which forms the plot of the film—and doesn’t shy away from showing them actually having real, unsimulated sex. Streaming services like Hulu, however, are shying away, with most carrying only a censored version of the award-winning movie.
‘No Skin Off My Ass’
This 1991 cult classic was written and directed by Canadian artist Bruce LaBruce and also casts him in the starring role, as a hairdresser who becomes obsessed with a neo-Nazi skinhead (played by Klaus von Brücker). The movie is intercut with real, unedited sex scenes between LaBruce and von Brücker, who were actually dating offscreen at the time.
This movie is not readily available to stream online.
‘Brüno’
Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to the slyly provocative Borat was this 2009 film, another mockumentary, in which he plays the titular Austrian fashion journalist. At one point, he infiltrates a swingers’ party—and everything happening there is totally real, albeit censored for broad audiences.
